Morocco Earthquake Appeal
A rare Powerful quake in Morocco kills more than 1,000 people and damages historic buildings in Marrakech. The magnitude-6.8 quake, the biggest to hit the North African country in 120 years, sent people fleeing their homes in terror and disbelief late Friday. Sending people racing from their beds into the darkened streets and toppling buildings in mountainous villages and ancient cities not built to withstand such force. More than 1,000 people were killed, and the toll was expected to rise as rescuers struggled Saturday to get through boulder-strewn roads to the remote areas hit hardest. The deadly earthquake struck while people were inside their homes, asleep in their beds, with no warning signs. Thousands of buildings, including hospitals and schools, have collapsed and infrastructure has been badly damaged. Local responders are desperately searching through the rubble for survivors.
Food, water, fuel and medicine are slow to reach the hardest-hit areas. Among the tens of thousands of victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco, hundreds of children are languishing in hospitals and shelters without their families and homes. Many roads are broken and split by the violent earthquake and communications remain limited. The U.N. humanitarian office said “needs are vast,” with people urgently requiring shelter, clean water, food, fuel and emergency medical care. Hospitals are struggling to deal with a huge influx of patients, many of whom are suffering major injuries. The strain on health services raises concerns that there may not be enough medical support for all those who need it. Muslim Global Relief is working on the ground to provide life-saving assistance to those in need. Donate to our Morocco Earthquake Appeal today so together we can save precious lives.
Morocco Earthquake Appeal: The Aftermath
Thousands have been injured and whole areas have been reduced to rubble. According to latest reports, a combined total of more than 1,000 people have already been confirmed dead in Morocco and is continuing to rise as bodies are recovered from the rubble. The aftershocks will continue for months, adding to the initial destruction. Thousands of people have been forced to shelter in tents or out in the open.
The situation on the ground is dire. Tens of thousands of people have been reported injured with many more trapped in the rubble following the terrifying collapse of infrastructure. Thousands of internally displaced Moroccans are living in makeshift camps, and those hit hard by the crisis are entirely reliant on international aid to assist with this emergency.
