Indonesia Earthquake

More than 1,400 people have died when an earthquake and ensuing tsunami hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Sept. 28. The 7.5-magnitude temblor triggered waves up to 20 feet high. The death count is still rising, as many people are missing and reported to be trapped in collapsed buildings. Initial estimates put the total number of people affected at more than 2 million. Initial reports indicate nearly 300,000 people are in urgent need of assistance; people are desperate for food and water. More than 70,000 people have lost their homes, and hundreds are injured. Bridges have been destroyed, roads are blocked, and telecommunications are down. Mass graves are being dug to avoid the spread of disease. The situation for survivors is dire as families scramble to get even the most basic of goods.

Food, water, fuel and medicine are slow to reach the hardest-hit areas outside Palu, the largest city heavily damaged in Friday’s disaster. Many roads are broken and split by the violent earthquake and communications remain limited. The U.N. humanitarian office said “needs are vast,” with people urgently requiring shelter, clean water, food, fuel and emergency medical care. Hospitals are struggling to deal with a huge influx of patients, many of whom are suffering major injuries. The strain on health services raises concerns that there may not be enough medical support for all those who need it. Muslim Global Relief is working with local partners on the ground to provide life-saving assistance to those in need. Donate to our emergency appeal today so together we can save precious lives.
